Professor Nikolaos Koutlianos has studied Sports Sciences (1996) and Medicine (2012) in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. The title of his doctorate is “Heart rate variability during exercise in amateur athletes”.
Dr. Koutlianos is Professor in Athletes’ Physical Health Evaluation in the School of Physical Education and Sports Science in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece and he is member of the Sports Medicine Laboratory of the same University for the last 29 years.
He is an exercise physiologist and he is strongly activated in the field of biomedical side effects of doping and in athletes’ cardiovascular pre-participation screening. His research interests are in pre-participation screening of athletes, prevention of sudden cardiac death in athletes, anti-doping, clinical exercise physiology, health disorders in various forms of exercise, exercise-induced adaptations of cardiovascular, respiratory and autonomic nervous system.
He is also especially experienced in the field of ergometric evaluation of healthy athletes as well as of athletes with cardiovascular disorders or patients with chronic diseases. He is highly experienced in the evaluation of cardiac, end-stage renal disease, obese, diabetic and elderly patients. He has also participated in various EU projects addressing topics such as the physical rehabilitation of stroke patients or the biomedical side effects of doping. Moreover, he is strongly activated in educational campaigns about the fight against doping in sports. He leaded the recent (2022) position statement of the sport cardiology and exercise nucleus of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology about the cardiovascular effects of doping substances, commonly prescribed medications and ergogenic aids in relation to sports. He is the instructor of many pre-graduate courses (Descriptive and Functional Human Anatomy, Human Physiology) in the School of Physical Education and Sports Science in Thessaloniki as well as of post-graduate courses (Ergogenic aids, Nutritional Supplements & Sports Nutrition) in two Master programs.
He was member of the scientific board of the Greek National Anti-Doping Organization as well as of the Organizing Committee of 13 International Congresses on Sports Medicine. Overall, he was member of the Organizing Committee of more than 30 National and International Congresses on Sports Medicine and Sports Sciences. Prof. N. Koutlianos has successfully supervised to completion 143 research masters or PhD students, 37 of them as Principal Supervisor. He is co-author in three Sports Medicine books, he has more than 200 announcements in international and Greek congresses and he has published more than 80 scientific papers. He has presented more than 130 lectures in international and Greek scientific congresses and he was chairman (or co-chairman) in more than 55 scientific round tables. He is member of many Greek and international sports medicine or sports-related associations. He is the Chairman of the Hellenic College of Sports Medicine and a reviewer in 25 international scientific journals.
He has served as the appointed municipal councilor for Sports, Youth, and Open University Affairs (2014-2018) and as President of the Municipal Council (2019) of the Municipality of Lagadas. He is a member of several Greek and international scientific organizations, as well as administrative committees of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. For his academic work and social contribution, he has been awarded by numerous scientific and sports organizations.
